How To Repair Tank and Vessel Metal Loss: A Step-By-Step Guide:

STEP 1

Mark off the damaged area for the tank repair application

Locate and mark off the damaged area of the tank and vessel.

STEP 2

Using a power tool to prepare the surface of a tank
Prepare the surface of the tank

Using a suitable power tool, prepare the repair area to SP11 cleanliness level to achieve a clean and roughened surface. It is ideal for a strong bond between the surface-tolerant coating and the substrate.

STEP 3

Mix the Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal) Base and Solidifier

Measure equal parts of the Base and Solidifier and transfer them to the mixing board.

STEP 4

Mix the product in a figure 8 motion

Mix all the parts in a figure 8 motion to achieve a uniform colour and streak-free consistency.

STEP 5

Clean the repair area with Belzona 9111 (Cleaner/ Degreaser)

Wash down the vessel and tank repair area with Belzona 9111 (Cleaner/Degreaser). Or use any other approved cleaner to remove all dirt, grease, and surface contaminants.

STEP 6

Use masking tape to mark off the repair area

Using masking tape, mask off the repair area.

STEP 7

Apply Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal) onto the surface of the tank repair area

Apply a thin layer of the material to the repair area pushing it well into the prepared profile once the product is mixed. This will help to create a strong bond between the repair material and the substrate.

STEP 8

Wet out the reinforcement tape with Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal)

Next, wet out the pre-measured reinforcement tape with Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal). Apply the tape, coated side down, to the repair covering the entire area. Be sure to apply the tape with at least 50% overlap to provide a strong and durable repair.

STEP 9

Smooth out the applied product

Smooth out the applied product. Then, apply the second layer of pre-measured tape in the same manner as the first one.

STEP 10

Overcoat the repair area
Overcoat the tank repair area

After applying both layers, overcoat the repair area with extra Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal). This will help to encapsulate the tank and vessel repair and provide more protection against corrosion and other forms of damage.

STEP 11

Inspect the repair area to make sure the tape is fully encapsulated, with no creases or valleys. Ensure that the repair ends at the prepared substrate.

STEP 12

After completing the tank repair, be sure to allow it to cure according to Belzona’s Instructions For Use.
