Belzona 1161 is a two-component, 100% paste-grade, surface-tolerant epoxy for tank and vessel repair. Customers can use the product for repairing and rebuilding machinery and equipment. The fully machinable product displaces fluid from the substrate. Meaning, that they can apply the product to wet or oily surfaces as well as for underwater applications.

How To Repair Tank and Vessel Metal Loss: A Step-By-Step Guide 

STEP 1

Locate and mark off the damaged area of the tank and vessel.

STEP 2

Using a power tool to prepare the surface of a tank

Using a suitable power tool, prepare the repair area to SP11 cleanliness level to achieve a clean and roughened surface. It is ideal for a strong bond between the surface-tolerant coating and the substrate.

STEP 3

Mix the Belzona 1161 Base and Solidifier

Measure equal parts of the Base and Solidifier and transfer them to the mixing board.

Mix the product in a figure 8 motion

Mix all the parts in a figure 8 motion to achieve a uniform color and streak-free consistency.

STEP 5

Clean the repair area with Belzona 9111 (Cleaner/ Degreaser)

Wash down the tank and vessel repair area with Belzona 9111 (Cleaner/Degreaser). Or use any other approved cleaner to remove all dirt, grease, and surface contaminants.

STEP 6

Use masking tape to mark off the repair area

Using masking tape, mask off the repair area.

STEP 7

Apply Belzona 1161 onto the surface of the tank repair area

Apply a thin layer of the material to the repair area pushing it well into the prepared profile once the product is mixed. This will help to create a strong bond between the repair material and the substrate.

Next, wet out the pre-measured reinforcement tape with Belzona 1161. Apply the tape, coated side down, to the repair covering the entire area. Be sure to apply the tape with at least 50% overlap to provide a strong and durable repair.

STEP 11

Inspect the repair area to make sure the tape is fully encapsulated, with no creases or valleys. Ensure that the repair ends at the prepared substrate.

STEP 12

After completing the repair, be sure to allow it to cure according to Belzona’s instructions for use.
