Thermal Insulation Coating, Belzona 3211 (Lagseal)
Belzona has developed an acrylic emulsion membrane, Belzona 3211 (Lagseal). This system is a water-based fire-resistant membrane coating for thermal insulation protection. It is a waterproofing coating that enables asset owners to protect thermal insulation components more effectively. Given that the coating is based on a liquid-applied membrane, asset owners can apply it on complex geometries by either brush or spray. Its permeable membrane properties allow moisture vapor to escape while preventing liquid water ingress, minimizing the risks of corrosion on jacketing, and insulation hardware.

Belzona recommends using Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) in conjunction with a polymer bonded glass reinforcing sheet, Belzona 9321 Lagseal Reinforcing Sheet, to allow the coating to flex with the substrate beneath. The reinforcing sheet will add durability and strength as well as act as a film thickness gauge for Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) applications.
Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) has undergone testing in compliance with ISO 11925-2 (SFI) and EN13829 (SBI) to assess its fire-resistant performance capabilities. The system achieved a classification of C s2 d0 in accordance with EN13501-1.

Key Benefits of Belzona 3211 (Lagseal)
- Simple application: Asset owners can apply the thermal insulation coating by either brush or spray onto new or existing lagging, whether dry or damp.
- Hygienic finish: Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) does not support the growth of bacteria or algae, providing an easy-to-clean as well as hygienic finish.
- Seamless finish: The system adheres to complicated geometries such as flanges, T pieces, or pipe elbows. It can bond to different types of thermal insulation materials including fibrous insulation, mineral wool, or foam insulation.
- Flexible system: Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) is a flexible waterproof membrane, allowing it to withstand movement due to temperature fluctuations and equipment vibration.
- Durable results: This heat-resistant membrane can resist oil, chemicals and water, steam impingement, infrared, and UV radiation. These properties provide long-term, durable protection.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Protect Thermal Insulation with Belzona 3211 (Lagseal)
STEP 1
Apply conditioner on the surrounding area where the application of Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) is to take place.
a. For concrete and brick areas, use Belzona 3911 (PSC Surface Conditioner).
b. For metal surfaces and other non-porous surfaces, use Belzona 3921 (GSC Surface Conditioner).

STEP 2
Pre-cut Belzona 9321 Reinforcing Sheet to match the structures’ geometries.

STEP 3
Position and secure the reinforcing sheet onto the substrate.

STEP 4
Stir Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) thoroughly before use to ensure uniform consistency.

STEP 5
Apply the first coat of Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) over the reinforcing sheet, making sure all pinholes are fully wetted. If required, Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) can be thinned using water. For large areas, spray applications can be an option.

STEP 6
Apply the Belzona 9321 reinforcing sheet to complex geometries such as bends and tees. Then, use a brush or spray to coat it with Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) for complete coverage. Ensure that the subsequent pieces of sheet overlap the previous one.

STEP 7
Once the first coat is fully dry, apply the second coat of Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) for additional durability and protection for thermal insulation materials.

STEP 8
If inspection is required, cut an access window using a sharp knife.

STEP 9
After inspection, reinstall the cut insulation back to the inspection window and reapply Belzona 3211 (Lagseal).

By following this step-by-step guide, asset owners can effectively and sustainably protect all types of thermal insulation on equipment such as piping, pipework, roof, tanks, air conditioning, boilers, heat exchangers, exhaust ducting, and pressure vessels.

FAQ
What is thermal insulation?
Thermal insulation reduces heat transfer. This system is important for industrial processes as it helps maintain operational efficiency. Asset owners apply thermal insulation to various structures such as pipelines, process vessels, roofs, and HVAC systems to maintain temperatures and improve energy efficiency.
Why are thermal insulation coatings important for industries?
Conventional methods for thermal insulation include metal cladding, rock wool, or foam glass. These insulation materials can lead to corrosion under insulation (CUI) and localized pitting corrosion on equipment surfaces due to moisture accumulation within the insulation layers. It can eventually cause premature failure of equipment.
Protective coatings are an additional protocol that can enhance CUI protection. These coatings mitigate water ingress, allow moisture to escape, resist UV exposure and fire, and are easy to apply by either brush or spray. This solution allows asset owners to protect their assets more effectively and extend their equipment life.
Can asset owners use different reinforcing sheets other than Belzona 9321 in conjunction with Belzona 3211 (Lagseal)?
Belzona recommends using Belzona 3211 (Lagseal) in conjunction with Belzona 9321 Reinforcing Sheet. This particular reinforcing sheet is an open weave, bonded and shedding resistant fiberglass flame-retardant treated mesh.
What is the maximum temperature resistance of Belzona 3211 (Lagseal)?
The product is suitable for service temperatures up to 212°F (100°C).
